Vanpooling is more than just a local issue, but a national one as well. The question of how vanpooling, carpooling, telework, alternative work hours and promoting transit use works in an overall national transportation program is crucial, especially as Congress debates a new authorization for Federal programs. Through their work with the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT), VPSI’s Government Relations Department of Jon Martz and Chris Simmons spend time working with Congress and USDOT to help promote efforts to increase these programs.

One of the specific efforts we are working on right now is supporting HR 3517, the Commute LESS Act. Sponsored by Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ 13), this bill would have two major effects on commuters. First, local agencies that fund transportation projects would be required to include local employers in their decision process. The concept behind this is that companies who support vanpooling should have their support recognized by the region and those efforts complimented by other transportation programs. Second, where a major project is undertaken to expand roadways or put in new transit facilities, programs that engage affected employers to help inform their employees on different ways they can get to work need to be included as a part of the project.

As Congress continues to debate the federal role in transportation, VPSI will continue to contribute its voice in support of vanpooling and vanpoolers across the country.

MilitaryVanpool.com Website Unveils New Content

VPSI’s military-focused website, www.militaryvanpool.com, unveiled a new “Military Vanpool in the News” page yesterday that features reprints of stories and, whenever possible, hyperlinks to the original story about vanpoolers and vanpooling at military installations throughout the country. As military installations from Fort Bragg, North Carolina to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska embrace sustainable transportation solutions like vanpooling these success stories continue to generate media attention. “Archiving news stories about successful vanpool programs at military installations is a logical addition to the militaryvanpool.com website and consistent with our objective of raising awareness about the military’s Mass Transportation Benefit Program,” noted Peyton Youmans, the site’s creator. Green Street’s “Pool” of Vans

The Pool of Vans

MichiVan made an official appearance at this year’s Green Street Fair, a three-day festival held in downtown Plymouth, Michigan created to help educate the community about eco-friendly products and services from all over.

MichiVan set up shop on “Alternative Highway.” On site to help spread the word about vanpooling were Account Coordinators Jennifer Schneider and Alexis Vertalka and one of their trusty Dodge Grand Caravans. A “pool” of foam vans sat casually on the table, where passerbys, mostly children, had the chance to pick out a floating vanpool and win a prize (See photo above).

The event turned out to be a great success. Hopefully, we’ll start seeing more MichiVans on the road!
