I would like to tell you about the best VPSI vanpool.
Our group has been together for about a year and a half. We commute 20 miles one way in the Southern California traffic. That means we can be in the van together between 30 and 70 minutes each way (depending on the day of the week and the weather). Our group has grown to be an extended family as we talk, nap or laugh all the way to and from work. We have even celebrated our vanpool anniversary, retirements, birthdays and holidays together as a family.
In May 2009 I had a seizure at home that prevented me from driving for six months. If not for vanpooling, I don’t know how I would have gotten to work everyday. When I was cleared by the DMV to drive again, my vanpoolers would casually make sure I drove out of the parking lot first, then follow me, just to make sure I was doing okay behind the wheel (no one told me this was happening for several months). The following post was written by James McKeever from The Woodlands, Texas. It was originally submitted to our iPhone contest, but it was so enjoyable that we had to share it with our readers.
I started vanpooling in April 2008; I started my MBA in August 2007. Until April 2008, I was spending 2+ hours in the car everyday…wasting my time and spending countless dollars on gas. Additionally, I was spending every waking hour at home studying, reading and preparing for class. Read More

VPSI’s Alice Lee-Cook will be hosting presentations on the benefits of vanpooling in January. If you commute to Overton Brooks VAMC, Fort Polk or Pueblo Chemical Depot, please stop in to see if vanpooling is a good fit for your commute.
Pueblo Chemical Depot
Date: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 and Thursday, January 14, 2010
Time: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Lunch break)
Location: Auditorium Bldg 6
The Pueblo Chemical Depot is located in southeastern Colorado, east of the City of Pueblo. The installation encompasses approximately 23,000 acres and includes a variety of buildings, structures and undeveloped areas. The depot’s mission is the safe, secure storage of the chemical weapons stockpile.
VPSI’s Vanpool program is now offered at Pueblo Chemical Depot. Federal employees are eligible to receive a monthly tax free allowance up to $230 month towards vanpool services. It is a month-to-month turnkey program which includes a commuter van, insurance, maintenance, road side assistance, loaner van, customer support service and a fuel card. Groups of 5-15 would share the ride from the same origin area and pick up others along the way. Contractors are welcome to join or start a new vanpool as well. Benefits will vary for contractors so check with your HR Dept. Read More

VPSI’s Brevard County Manager
On August 26 I wrote a very pessimistic message regarding my feelings of the future of our Space Program and its possible effect on vanpooling in Brevard and other areas of the country that support NASA. During the month of September it seems that folks have finally reached a similar conclusion and are springing into action. I believe this is important enough for all of us for me to keep you further advised of what is going on, at least in Brevard County and Florida. Accordingly I am including a recent Florida Today editorial and a Brevard County Board of County Commissioners News Release. You might be interested in looking at SaveSpace.US to see the campaign that is now being mounted, and even send one of the 500,000 letters to President Obama.

The following post was written by vanpooler Mary Sherer from Peachtree City, Georgia. It was originally submitted to our iPhone contest, but it was so enjoyable that we had to share it with our readers.
I have been vanpooling for many years. First in Chicago and now in Atlanta. Back when I was pregnant with my first child, I had an hour commute and my hospital was close to our home. I worked up until the day before I had my baby. We often joked that we would need to have a “code word” in case I went into labor and the vanpool needed to get me home.
For some reason they felt that was a better deal than calling for the ride home. So, of course, I started having contractions while at work…my vanpool announced it over the loudspeaker in the Regional Office. Everyone made it to the van in five minutes or less…shuffled me into the van, avoided all the pot holes, did lamaze breathing with me and promptly delivered me to my hospital. My baby was not born that night, but they decided that it was best if I stayed closer to home to work!! I did have a very healthy little girl the next week. The vanpool riders, who all are still very good friends of mine, came to the hospital and visited their “almost delivery.”
