Another Road Trip Disaster

It seems impossible these days, but less than 20 years ago, cell phones were not common and the Internet basically didn’t exist to 99.5 percent of us. So, it was in those wild, unconnected days that a buddy and I set off on an epic road trip as the end of our college days approached.

That buddy was – and remains – a huge Red Sox fan, so we headed from Michigan to Boston to take in a game. It was a marvelous experience and we enjoyed every sight, smell and sound at Fenway Park. And when it was time to head out, we counted our pennies and discovered we could probably afford one more night in the area. We consulted our road atlas and decided that since neither of us had been to Cape Cod that it would be a perfect destination.

We’re already halfway through the summer, so there’s still plenty of time left to hit the road and apparently more of us are doing just that. In this turbulent economy, more Americans are climbing into their car rather than onto a plane for vacation. And speaking as someone who just spent five days and 3,025 miles in a car with his wife and three-year-old daughter, I can attest to the upsides and downsides to the all-American road trip.

Admittedly, I’m a road-trip veteran and love the sense of discovery that comes with every drive. I’ve also driven across the country several times in cars that most people would question for a quick spin to the corner market.
