June 17th was National Dump the Pump day. Transportation Choices, a group consisting of MichiVan Commuter Vanpools, Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), Detroit Department of Transportation, Detroit People Mover and the Smart Bus held an event outside of the Compuware World Headquarters building on this National Event Day.
Each alternative mode of transportation had a table set up with games to get the individuals engaged in learning more about the mode of transportation that they offered. The individuals not only walked away with information regarding multiple means of ways to “dump the pump” but also a small trinket to remember the mode that will benefit them in the future.
During the event Detroit’s Fox 2 News was present and did a small clip on Dennis Green, Marketing Manager of the Detroit People Mover. It aired on the 5:00 news. See it here.

In coordination with our green initiative, MichiVan has adopted a highway. It’s a two mile stretch, located on I-75 in both North and South directions, between 14 Mile Road and Rochester Road, about 20 minutes North of Detroit. Three times a year MichiVan will be responsible for trash pickup at this location.
MichiVan and VPSI Home Office staff were out on Monday, September 14th, 2009 for their first day of trash pickup. The crew consisted of twelve employees with one mission – to make the stretch of I-75 completely clean. After 5 hours and 50 trash bags, that mission was complete.
If you are interested in more information regarding MichiVan’s Adopt-A-Highway, or you would be interested in helping with next year’s pickup, please contact Jennifer Schneider at, jennifer.schneider@vpsiinc.com.
This year’s ACT International Conference starts Sunday. It runs August 30 to September 2 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC.
Featured presentations include an overview of the MichiVan vanpool program by VPSI’s Angie Payne and a public policy council topic session by VPSI’s Jon Martz.
