roadtrip

We’re already halfway through the summer, so there’s still plenty of time left to hit the road and apparently more of us are doing just that. In this turbulent economy, more Americans are climbing into their car rather than onto a plane for vacation. And speaking as someone who just spent five days and 3,025 miles in a car with his wife and three-year-old daughter, I can attest to the upsides and downsides to the all-American road trip.

Admittedly, I’m a road-trip veteran and love the sense of discovery that comes with every drive. I’ve also driven across the country several times in cars that most people would question for a quick spin to the corner market. So, I’ve developed a methodology to road tripping and below are some ideas and tips to help make yours easier and more fun. Read More

Vanpooling Restored my Faith in Mankind!

Flat Tire

The following post was written by Vincent Gray from Dayton, Ohio. It was originally submitted to our iPhone contest, but it was so enjoyable that we had to share it with our readers.

I commute from Dayton, Ohio to Columbus, Ohio (90 miles) everyday and I wouldn’t be able to afford to go to work without the vanpool because of high gas prices and not to mention the wear and tear that my vehicle would have to endure and the associated repair cost. Also the commuting experiences have renewed my faith in mankind.

One day we had a flat tire so we pulled over to the side of the road to change it and we had so many good samaritans pulling over to ask if we needed help that it actually slowed us down from changing the tire.

Our Personal Pit Crew

The following post was written by vanpooler Darlene Torrez from Santa Maria, California. It was originally submitted to our iPhone contest, but it was so enjoyable that we had to share it with our readers.

One morning while picking up riders at our final stop, we noticed one of the tires was low and that we had picked up a screw in the tire. As our van was partially full of men who were Nascar fans, they proceed to think they were part of a pit crew and dispersed like fleas to tackle the flat. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced a flat in a 15-passenger van, but the task of getting the spare tire out is not a quick one. One person was raising the vehicle, another was loosening the lug nuts, two people were reading the owners manual to find the metal rod and associated slot to lower the spare tire. A Nascar pit crew they were not, but we had such a great time watching the experience.
