The above photo was submitted to our Photos Taken From the Road contest. Unfortunately, we couldn’t award everyone an iPad for their photos, but we can feature honorable mentions like this one, submitted by Rob in Detroit, Michigan. He took this photo of the smoke from a burning building last summer traveling on M-10.

For the next couple of weeks, we’ll be featuring some of the top photos submitted to the contest, so be on the lookout for more of our favorite photos from commuters around the country.

June 17th was National Dump the Pump day. Transportation Choices, a group consisting of MichiVan Commuter Vanpools, Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), Detroit Department of Transportation, Detroit People Mover and the Smart Bus held an event outside of the Compuware World Headquarters building on this National Event Day.

Each alternative mode of transportation had a table set up with games to get the individuals engaged in learning more about the mode of transportation that they offered. The individuals not only walked away with information regarding multiple means of ways to “dump the pump” but also a small trinket to remember the mode that will benefit them in the future.

During the event Detroit’s Fox 2 News was present and did a small clip on Dennis Green, Marketing Manager of the Detroit People Mover. It aired on the 5:00 news. See it here.

The awards recognize organizations that have taken exemplary steps for their efforts to offer alternatives for their employees driving alone and thereby reduce air pollution, traffic congestion, and fuel from Jan. 1, 2009 to Oct. 15, 2009.

Two of the winning companies have on-site VPSI Commuter Centers helping them manage all of their commuting needs. Pfizer Inc., operators of the GreenWheels program, was a Gold Winner and Compuware Corporation, headquartered in Detroit, was named a Bronze Winner.

Commuter Challenge 2009

Some people need to be challenged…that’s why we created the Commuter Challenge! SEMCOG (SE Mich. You are invited to the kick-off event on Friday, May 8th from 11am-2pm at Cadillac Square (adjacent to Campus Martius Park). Fox 2′s Jackie Paige will MC the event and Fox 2 will cover the event live at 11:00 am.

MichiVan will be there with a van full of balloons. You guess how many balloons are in the van and you win a $50 fuel card. MichiVan will also have an event on Monday, May 11 to highlight the Commuter Challenge Carpool/Vanpool Day. Stop by Compuware’s plaza from 11am -1pm to pick a car from our swimming pool to win some great prizes! (Yes, similar to pick a duck at the fair!) Hope you can come by!
