Oh the woes of traffic, congestion and commuting! Forbes did a nice write-up on the best and worst cities for commuters. To help eliminate frustrations with cost, Forbes also listed out ways to save on traveling and featured vanpooling (and VPSI!) as an alternative.
Did your city make either list? Best cities for commuters include Tucson, Pittsburgh and Tulsa. Those unfortunately commuting in cities like Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas would probably agree with Forbes decision to put them on the worst list.

I read the news today, oh boy!
About a group of folks who were annoyed.
40 peeps formed a vanpool to commute.
A pool of vans was born.
On 4 vans they formed.
They leave New Bedford at diff’rent times.
They were amazed how much they’d save.
A crowd of people stood and stared.
They’re wishing they could join.
Nobody was really sure if it would work.
I rode the van today, oh boy!!
We talked about how much we’d save and more.
With 4 vans to choose you see.
We have flexibility.
And we only pay…one…feeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
I love to sa-e-a-e-a-e-ve mon-on-on-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey!!!!!!
<<>> With the alarm clock ring of course!!!)
Woke up, fell out of bed, On to the Park N’ Ride I sped.
Found my way to the van and took my seat.
And stretching out, I noticed I was beat…
The Ride was smooth and the price was right.
With vanpooling I’ve seen the light.
Pulled on to the highway and headed for work and somebody spoke and I went into a dream.
Ahh Ahhhhh-ahh-ahhhh.
We talk about the news, oh boy!!!
40+ peeps who stay in touch and know so much.
And though the talk sometimes gets hot.
We know just when to stop.
But now we know we’d rather vanpool…than…NOT.
I love to sa-e-a-e-a-e-ve mon-on-on-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey!!!!!!

I have been vanpooling for many years. First in Chicago and now in Atlanta. Back when I was pregnant with my first child, I had an hour commute and my hospital was close to our home. I worked up until the day before I had my baby. We often joked that we would need to have a “code word” in case I went into labor and the vanpool needed to get me home.
For some reason they felt that was a better deal than calling for the ride home. So, of course, I started having contractions while at work…my vanpool announced it over the loudspeaker in the Regional Office. Everyone made it to the van in five minutes or less…shuffled me into the van, avoided all the pot holes, did lamaze breathing with me and promptly delivered me to my hospital. My baby was not born that night, but they decided that it was best if I stayed closer to home to work!! I did have a very healthy little girl the next week. The vanpool riders, who all are still very good friends of mine, came to the hospital and visited their “almost delivery.”
