Winter Driving Tips

Winter weather is (unfortunately) fast approaching and snow has already started falling in some parts of the country. It’s a good time to review some basic winter weather safe driving tips. Here are some pre- trip tips to make sure your vehicle is in top winter driving shape:

First, check the battery, coolant and wiper blades. Fill the washer fluid and always keep the gas tank at least half full. Next, check the tires for wear and proper inflation and be sure to keep a snow scraper/brush in vehicle.

Now for the driving tips:

  • Always clear snow from your vehicle, including the roof
  • Keep windshield and windows clear of ice and snow
  • Allow extra time for your trip and slow down
  • Avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes
  • Watch for icy bridge decks and slippery shady areas on roadways
  • Leave extra room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you
  • Turn on headlights during wintery weather
  • Did I mention to slow down and drive for conditions?

Healthy Breakfasts on the Go

August 9th, 2011 0 Comments

m12A good breakfast is a fundamental part of a healthy, productive day.

But life is hectic and sometimes it’s difficult to eat a good, balanced breakfast before we have to rush off to work. And depending on your dietary tastes, bringing breakfast along in the vanpool can occasionally make you unpopular with your fellow ridesharers.

In other words, leave the kippered fish at home, mate.

But here are some healthy – and inoffensive – options for eating on the run while vanpooling.

  • Fruit: Some of you are probably saying, “Duh.” But bear with me, because eating fruit for breakfast doesn’t have to mean wolfing down a banana in the van. Fruit salad is delicious and easy to prepare ahead of time. Just combine some sliced apples, grapes, bananas … whatever you like, really … at the beginning of the week and portion it out into individual servings perfect for a refreshing commuter feast. And perhaps best of all, it eliminates the question of what to do with the peel after the banana is eaten.

Commuting in Perfect Harmony: Creating Perfect Vanpooling Soundtracks

August 1st, 2011 0 Comments

musicnotesChoosing music for a commute is a delicate proposition, and a lot of variables go into creating just the right musical vibe.

But with a little thought, you can create a soundtrack that not only everyone will enjoy, but which will also help you your fellow vanpoolers get to know one another better.
With that in mind, here are some tips for creating the perfect soundtrack to help ease your commute and foster harmony (and melody) in the van:

  • Know your audience –Try to match the music you select with the personalities of your fellow commuters. Even if you don’t know what types of music your ridemates like, it’s fun to make educated guesses. Use their responses to help craft your next soundtrack.
  • Take turns being the deejay – This is beneficial on a couple fronts. First, when everyone contributes music, no one feels left out of the loop. Second, hearing the music that your ride-sharing friends enjoy helps you to know them better. And vice versa.
  • Make playlists – This iPod feature has uses beyond creating mixes for your workouts. Use genre and artist searches and put your commuting songs together on a playlist. Then, once you’re in the van, let your iPod do the work for you.
  • Challenge yourself – Everybody has a deejay lurking somewhere in their psyche. Channel  your inner Casey Kasem and compile road music that will have everyone tapping their feet.
  • Add some surprises – The best mixes always include some curveballs. Making a jazz mix? Weird cover versions, obscure B-sides by familiar artists and choice live cuts often mark the difference between a compelling mix and a mundane one.

Most of all, have fun. Remember, the idea is to make your commute easier and more enjoyable. If you have fun creating your mixes, chances are your fellow commuters are going to dig them, too. – Will Stewart

Is Tornado Season Over Yet?

Is anyone else experiencing tornado havoc in their state? Here in Michigan, we’ve put up with several touchdowns. The photograph below was taken by one of our Michigan vanpools. They witnessed the funnel cloud on the way from Ann Arbor to Tecumseh.
