Road Trip Disasters – And How to Deal with Them

car-troubleWhether it was the time the car I was driving from California to Michigan experienced catastrophic transmission failure – on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of the desert, no less – or the drive east from Seattle in a car that developed a problem that ultimately required oil (and lots of it) to be poured into engine about every 100 miles, I’ve experienced more than my share of road trip disasters. And while none of them was severe enough to halt the trip altogether, they all tested my coping skills and forced me to reevaluate my approach to long journeys and vacations by car.

Unfortunately, many car problems are like time bombs, going off with no warning or previous indication. That car with the transmission problem was a perfect example. I’d driven it around the Los Angeles for several days prior to starting off on the long drive and it performed flawlessly. It wasn’t until I was climbing some serious grades out beyond San Bernardino that it consumed itself. I spent nearly two days in a small town along the route to Las Vegas, while a repair shop rebuilt the transmission.

VPSI Vanpool Safety Manager to Conduct Session at ACT Conference

On August 30, 2010 Andy Bawden, VPSI’s Vanpool Safety Manager, will co-present a Vanpool Council Session about Safety and Risk Management, along with Aaron Fodge of the Colorado North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The session will include an interactive discussion of how to respond to a vanpool emergency and how to reduce the risk of a vanpool accident. The session starts at 3:15 PM on the first day of the ACT Conference, held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort in Indian Wells, CA.

Jon Martz, ACT Immediate Past-President and Vice President of Government Relations for VPSI, is the primary organizer of the ACT Vanpool Summit, and he encourages all members to attend. Andy or Jon can be reached in Troy, MI at 248-597-3500.

Routt County Vanpool Program

routtcountybackupphotoVPSI and Routt County in the beautiful Colorado mountains entered into a partnership to provide vanpooling as a new commute option for residents traveling from Stagecoach or Oak Creek into Steamboat Springs. VPSI’s services include providing comfortable passenger vehicles, a bumper-to-bumper maintenance program, a comprehensive insurance policy and a staff dedicated to serving the needs of the South Routt County commuter.

By implementing the vanpool program, Routt County officials are responding to the needs of their constituents,who have requested public transit for the southern portion of the county. The commissioners were able to secure funding through a Federal grant and a local donation from the Trapper’s Lake Sierra Club. Read More

New vans roll out at Pine Bluff Arsenal and Pueblo Chemical Depot

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – The Pine Bluff Arsenal, located about 40 miles from Little Rock, and 8 miles northwest of Pine Bluff, is an active military installation, which stores 12.5% of the nation’s obsolete chemical weapons. Pine Bluff Chemical Activity conducts the current operations to destroy the part of the US chemical weapon stockpile held at the arsenal.

The vanpool program was launched in late August 2009 and eight groups initially signed up immediately. Most of these groups have long commutes, averaging 80 miles round trip. The momentum for the program continues with great support from Amber Lecy, Debra Eifling, the Commanding office and the current participants. Read More
