Our current vanpool is complied of riders who were kicked off other vanpools. We call ourselves the misfits of the vanpool world. We all come from different occupations and our stories of being “kicked off” other vanpools are funny and entertaining not only to us but our friends and family as well.

VPSI was well represented at this year’s ACT (Association for Commuter Transportation) Conference in Washington, DC. From the exhibit hall, to the breakout sessions, to the member activities, VPSI was there. Local representatives Rico Fleshman and Cathleen McIntyre were members of this year’s organizing committees, assisting with new member activities, the exhibit hall and in providing local transportation solutions for attendees.
VPSI speakers included Jon Martz and myself, discussing the current ACT public policy initiatives, especially those dealing with the next federal transportation authorization. Moreover, in a standing room only session, Angie Payne discussed the successes and challenges of the MichiVan Vanpool Program and how the lessons from that program might prove useful to other vanpool programs across the country. One morning while picking up riders at our final stop, we noticed one of the tires was low and that we had picked up a screw in the tire. As our van was partially full of men who were Nascar fans, they proceed to think they were part of a pit crew and dispersed like fleas to tackle the flat. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced a flat in a 15-passenger van, but the task of getting the spare tire out is not a quick one. One person was raising the vehicle, another was loosening the lug nuts, two people were reading the owners manual to find the metal rod and associated slot to lower the spare tire. A Nascar pit crew they were not, but we had such a great time watching the experience.
