The National Defense Industrial Association’s Environment, Energy, Security & Sustainability Symposium and Exhibition (E2S2) opened at the Denver Convention Center yesterday and many of the nearly 1,100 attendees flocked to VPSI’s booth to learn more about sustainable transportation solutions like vanpooling. With about 1,100 vanpools in service at 96 military installations around the country, many of the conference attendees were familiar with VPSI’s program but few realized VPSI captured and reported the environmental benefits that result from the program. Mr. Herman Varmall, Environmental Department Head at the Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Maryland, observed that collecting and reporting the environmental benefits of the carpools and vanpools commuting to “Pax River” would help support the base’s overarching sustainability goals.

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – The Pine Bluff Arsenal, located about 40 miles from Little Rock, and 8 miles northwest of Pine Bluff, is an active military installation, which stores 12.5% of the nation’s obsolete chemical weapons. Pine Bluff Chemical Activity conducts the current operations to destroy the part of the US chemical weapon stockpile held at the arsenal.

The vanpool program was launched in late August 2009 and eight groups initially signed up immediately. Most of these groups have long commutes, averaging 80 miles round trip. The momentum for the program continues with great support from Amber Lecy, Debra Eifling, the Commanding office and the current participants. Read More

The Overton Brooks VA Medical Center (OBVAMC) is located in the northwestern corner of the state of Louisiana in Shreveport. It is a rural area with light traffic where commuting to work takes no more than 15-20 minutes. When OBVAMC launched the vanpool program in late 2009, one group readily joined the program to enjoy their free ride to work. As Chris Moore, the Driver/Coordinator of VPSI’s first vanpool at OBVAMC observed, “It is the best kept secret here and employees are slowly learning about it. We simply love it!” Currently, a couple new groups are in the works.

OBVAMC recently won three Green Globe Awards from the Green Building Initiative. To find out more visit here.
