This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
The American Public Transportation Association, of which VPSI is a member, is joining in a nationwide Moment of Remembrance to commemorate the lives lost during the attacks.
Participants are encouraged to ring bells, blow train whistles or make announcements during the minute-long memorial, which will take place at the same time across the country:
“Our local, state, and national institutions—including state and local governments, military and veterans’ organizations, the news media, houses of worship, and sports teams—have been called upon to mark this minute with bells or sirens to honor the victims,” said Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), the sponsor of the Moment of Remembrance resolution which was passed by the U.S. Senate.
It seems impossible these days, but less than 20 years ago, cell phones were not common and the Internet basically didn’t exist to 99.5 percent of us. So, it was in those wild, unconnected days that a buddy and I set off on an epic road trip as the end of our college days approached.
That buddy was – and remains – a huge Red Sox fan, so we headed from Michigan to Boston to take in a game. It was a marvelous experience and we enjoyed every sight, smell and sound at Fenway Park. And when it was time to head out, we counted our pennies and discovered we could probably afford one more night in the area. We consulted our road atlas and decided that since neither of us had been to Cape Cod that it would be a perfect destination.

Each fall/winter VPSI conducts customer satisfaction surveys of our drivers, riders, and influencers. This past year (Oct/Nov 2010) we surveyed more than 4,000 drivers and about 11,000 riders. The report card is now in: The response rate was great! Thank you very much for sharing with us how you feel about our products and services.
Here are some interesting facts from our survey:
• 64% of VPSI riders have been in a vanpool for more than two years.
• 72% of our drivers have been driving in a vanpool for more than two years.
• When asked how did you commute before vanpooling with VPSI, 7% said they used some form of public transit and 93% either drove alone, carpooled, rode a vanpool, or used some other commute mode.

An article from Forbes.com estimates that by 2020, trends and attitudes towards transportation will shift to greener, healthier, social options and that “smart will be the new status.” The author estimates that vehicles will be selected based on purpose and distance — a bicycle or electric car for short trips across town and shared resources for the daily commute, which will decrease as populations continue to urbanize.
